Card tennis team season endsAlexandria defeated Detroit Lakes 6-1 before falling to Bemidji 5-2
The Cardinal tennis team saw its season come to an end in the north subsection semifinals against a strong Bemidji team last week.
Alexandria opened the subsection tournament as the third seed and played like a top-seeded team in a 6-1 win over Detroit Lakes. Ashley White, Jenna Galstad and Rachel Astrup all picked up wins in the singles lineup. The Cardinals swept through the doubles lineup with wins from the duos of Brianna Ebert and Laura Johnson, Tyra Quitmeyer and Kristen Schmidt, and Rebecca Lukes and Katie Basiago.
That set up a match-up against the Lumberjacks with a trip to the subsection finals on the line. The Cardinals fought hard but came up short in a 5-2 match against the second seed.
“We played the best we have ever played against Bemidji and although some of the scores don’t show it, we were right with them at most every spot,” head coach Dave Ronning said. “The score ended up at 2-5 in Bemidji’s favor, but our girls felt as though we had won the match. Everyone gave it their best effort and it truly did feel like a win, even if the scoreboard didn’t show it that way.”
White and Galstad picked up the two wins for Alexandria. White won a thriller at second singles. She won the first set 7-6 (6) before falling 3-6 in the second. She came back and outlasted Cortne Solberg in another tiebreaker in the third, 7-6 (4). Galstad had things come a little easier in a 6-1, 6-1 win at third singles.
The loss ended the Cardinals season at 14-6 overall.
