It was a game that was well in hand for the Blizzard last Friday as they took on Albert Lea, holding a 2-0 lead early in the third period.

But the Thunder had a different ending in mind, scoring three goals in the final period to skate past Alexandria for the win.

Kyle Clay put the Blizzard on the board first, scoring at 18:54 of the second period, with Logan Romano adding goal No. 2 at 2:17 of period three.

Goals by Brian Nehring and Niko Kapetznovic tied the game before Danny Wood’s power play goal at 16:41 gave the Thunder the winning margin.

Chris Paliafito took the loss in goal for the Blizzard.

Owatonna 3,

Alexandria 2 OT

Alexandria again had the lead heading into the third period against Owatonna Saturday night as Steve Zierke and Alex Altenbernd scored a goal apiece for a 2-1 lead.

Zierke scored on a power play in the first period with assists by Chris Franks and Tommy Westmark, then Alex Altenbernd gave the Blizzard their first lead in the second period at 19:59 on assists by Westmark and Brett Wall.

Three power plays gave the Express the win. Jake Suter scored at 8:481 of the first period, Brian McGinty scored at 16:50 of the third period and Cory Thorson snatched away the win from Alexandria at 4:42 of overtime.

Chris Kamal took the loss in goal, despite stopping 26 shots.

Next up for the Blizzard is their home opener tonight, Friday, when Albert Lea comes to town for a 7 p.m. game at the Runestone Community Center. Alexandria will then host Owatonna Saturday night at 7 p.m.

The Blizzard also have an exhibition game tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28, when the USA Olympic women’s hockey team comes to town.
