Someplace Safe in Alexandria, along with Wings Family Supportive Services and Uniting Communities Advocating Non-Violence (UCAN), are hosting the third annual Taking Steps Against Domestic Violence next Tuesday, October 13.
The walk to support a violence-free community, which will be about one mile, begins at 5 p.m. at the Douglas County Courthouse. The first 200 people will receive a free T-shirt. It will take place rain or shine.
After the walk, which will end at Calvary Lutheran Church, a free, light lunch will be served and there will be two guest speakers – the surviving daughters of Linda (Green) Becker, who was murdered in 2006 during a domestic violence situation near Osakis.
Guests will also be able to view the Clothesline Project from 2006, the year Becker was murdered.
Community members are encouraged to attend the walk and the event afterward at Calvary Lutheran Church.
The Taking Steps Against Domestic Violence is held in conjunction with the Domestic Abuse Awareness Luncheon, hosted by UCAN. Both events are held during the month of October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The ninth annual luncheon will take place Wednesday, October 14 beginning at 11:45 a.m. at Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center.
This year’s guest speaker is Cordelia Anderson, who is a nationally known speaker and consultant on prevention of child sexual exploitation and sexual violence, as well as strategies to strengthen individuals, families, businesses and communities.
Anderson’s career has been dedicated to the prevention of various forms of harm including sexual violence, gender violence, child sexual abuse and exploitation, bullying and youth violence, along with the impact pornography has on society.
Tickets for the luncheon are $13 and are available at Bremer Bank.
