Volleyball: Lakers fourth, Chargers fifth, Silverstreaks sixth in Minnewaska Invitational
Tenth-ranked New London-Spicer came away with the championship from the Minnewaska Invitational volleyball tournament Saturday.
The host Lakers were fourth, Brandon-Evansville fifth and Osakis was sixth.
Osakis results
The Silverstreaks tied with Minnewaska 26-24, 20-25, lost to New London-Spicer 25-13, 25-19, tied with Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 26-25, 20-25 and lost to Brandon-Evansville 24-26, 14-25, finishing sixth in the tournament.
“Our record for the day does not indicate how well we played at times,” said Osakis head coach Kirsten Wessel. “We were communicating much better and playing very good defense.
“If we continue to improve in those areas and be more consistent, we will be a very strong team.”
The Silverstreaks were led at the net by Stephanie Massmann’s 16 kills and five blocks, while Emily Toop was 26-for-29 serving with an ace and had 25 digs.
Alicia Wagner had 29 digs and Amanda Kluver had 17 assists in the game.

The Chargers were fifth in the tournament, winning three of their four games.
They defeated Ortonville 25-15, 25-8, fell to Hancock 13-25-, 17-25, topped Benson 25-14, 25-15 then defeated Osakis in the fifth place game.
“We saw some great setting, passing and hitting for most of the day,” said head coach Gary Ekdahl. “We need to improve on picking up the short tip by reading the hand position of the hitter.
“When a team plays in a tourney, the players need to be ready to play the next match; we did not,” he added. “We started off slow in each of our matches, giving up unforced errors.
“When we cut down the unforced errors, we will play with any team.
“When we played Hancock, we let too many free balls go out without putting points on the board,” Ekdahl continued. “We had two junior players step up and play their best volleyball this year, and we will need a couple of seniors to do the same. “All the bench players got in and played in at least one set.”
