The Alexandria Area Adult Basic Education (ABE) Consortium has partnered with Rural MnCEP and Alexandria Technical College (ATC) to offer two free pre-healthcare/nursing courses at ATC this fall. The courses are offered through District 206 Community Education.

Both of the nine-week courses are offered at no cost to the first 20 qualified applicants. The registration deadline is September 14.

The pre-healthcare/nursing courses will be held at ATC Mondays and Wednesdays September 21 through November 18. The daytime course will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and the evening course will be held from 6 to 9:30 p.m.

Financial assistance for transportation and/or childcare expenses incurred to attend these classes will be available through Rural Minnesota CEP.

The pre-healthcare/nursing curriculum for this course is meant to be a bridge between certified nursing assistant (CNA) and licensed practical nursing (LPN) training.

The course will help students develop the skills and knowledge essential to succeed in the collegiate setting. The curriculum includes medical terminology, basic nursing skills, job shadowing, reading, writing and math for healthcare occupations, as well as information on college nursing programs and healthcare career options.

Alexandria ABE will also offer an ESL course at ATC this fall entitled “Academic Success for ESL Learners.”

This free nine-week course is designed for students whose native language is not English. It will focus on the reading and writing skills needed to succeed in college level fundamental reading and writing courses, as well as academic study and time management skills.

This class will be held at ATC Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 9:30 p.m. September 22 through November 19.

To register for either course or for more information, contact Sandy Schroepfer, Alexandria ABE coordinator, at (320) 762-0627 or e-mail sschroep@alexandria.k12.mn.us by September 14.
