The Alexandria girls’ tennis team went on the road to pick up its first Central Lakes Conference win of the season on Tuesday.
The Cardinals swept through the doubles lineup on their way to a 6-1 win over Fergus Falls. The duos of Kristen Schmidt and Tyra Quitmeyer and Brittany Holm and Rebecca Lukes won their matches in straight sets.
It took a third set for Laura Johnson and Brianna Ebert to pick up the win. Johnson and Ebert fell 2-6 in the first but battled back to take the next two 6-1, 6-2.
“We talked about a new strategy and about being more active and aggressive,” head coach Dave Ronning said when referring to the first-set loss. “They went out and played it to perfection.”
Ashley White led the charge in the singles lineup with a dominant performance in the third slot. White won 6-0, 6-0, while Jenna Galstad and Rachel Astrup also picked up straight-set wins at Nos. 2 and 4 singles, respectively.
The win moved Alexandria to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the CLC.
“Our emphasis as of late has been on being more aggressive and communicating about what’s happening on the court and exploiting the opponents’ weaknesses and just being more athletic,” Ronning said. “I believe the girls are starting to catch on and things are starting to click, but it is going to take hard work and commitment and everyone working together to make each other better.”
