West Central Area tennis team opens season with pair of wins

The new season got underway on a positive note for West Central Area’s tennis team Friday as they swept through singles action in their first match, then swept doubles action in the second.

“I’m very excited to open up the season this way,” said coach Sue Maier of her team’s 5-2 and 6-1 wins over Morris and Parkers Prairie. “Our team was showing their strength today, only losing three out of their 14 matches played.”

Against Morris, the Knights were able to win three of their four singles matches in straight sets, with the fourth match being won on a third set tiebreaker.

Against the Panthers, West Central Area put in a very strong showing to win six of the seven matches, with all but one being won in straight sets.

“Nicole Anderson, in her first time playing the No. 1 singles position, put in a tough match, playing very lengthy points,” said Maier, “but was overcome by a strong and talented player, Kelsey Warren.

“I’d have to say, No. 2 singles Sarah Wagner had the match of the day. She won a tough 3-set match against Kayla Sjobeck.

“Wagner lost the first set 4-6, won the second set 6-4, overcoming a 1-4 deficit earlier in the set.

“In the third set, Sarah found enough energy and toughness to pull out the win she needed at 7-5,” Maier added. “With the third set being 6-5, I was glad to see Sarah have the mental toughness to pull out the next game to save herself from having to go to a tiebreaker to win the final set.”

West Central is now 2-0 and travels to Staples-Motley today, Wednesday, for an eight team tournament.
