A variety of volunteer opportunities are available in Douglas County. For more information, call the numbers listed with each opportunity below.

United Way: Volunteers are needed for the 12th annual Chili Feed and Silent Auction September 29 at Broadway Ballroom in Alexandria. Help is needed anytime from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call (320) 763-4840 or e-mail united-3@rea-alp.com.

Lutheran Social Services: The Incredible Years Parenting Program Class runs September 28 through December 14 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Volunteers are needed to assist the childcare coordinator. Call Jody at (320) 762-5124.

Knute Nelson and Nelson Gables: Play games with residents; organize and order greeting cards at the gift shop; work in the coffee/gift shop; transport residents to and from events and activities within Knute Nelson; computer assistant to help tenants with emailing and surfing the Internet; give manicures to residents; visit with residents; help at community events, such as the Community Picnic on Thursday, August 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Taste of Home Cooking Show at Geneva Christian Center, Tuesday, September 15, 4:30 to 8 p.m., or the Health Care Auxiliaries of MN Conference September 16-18. School District 206 Community Education Mentor program: Mentor a student in grades 5-9 in need of a supportive friendship; be a Lunch Buddy mentor to a student in grades 1-6; learn puppetry to present information about disability awareness and self-protection issues to elementary students. Habitat for Humanity: Office volunteer trainings will be held the second Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. at the Habitat for Humanity office. Register by calling (320) 762-4255.
