Leonard Ernest Chan, 90, Glenwood, died Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at Glenwood Retirement Village.
Leonard was born February 14, 1919 to Wencil and Mary (Kalina) Chan in Reno Township, Pope County. He grew up on a farm in Reno Township on Lake Reno. On April 17, 1944 he was united in marriage to Betty Mae Star at Reno Catholic Church. They lived on the Chan family farm for 44 years and raised their three sons, James, Thomas and Randy.
While living on the farm, Leonard belonged to the Reno Catholic Church and served on the Reno Township Council. In 1988, he and Betty retired and moved to Glenwood. Leonard loved hunting, fishing, old time music, playing whist, watching the Minnesota Twins and going to the casino, but his favorite pastime was fishing for walleyes. He would fish summer and winter, always searching and waiting for the “big one.”
He loved to spend time with his sons and their families. Most gatherings involved a fish fry. If he wasn’t on the lake, he enjoyed going to social gatherings with many friends. Leonard was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother-in-law and uncle and will be dearly missed.
Leonard is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty Mae Chan; sons, James and Beverly Chan of Manhattan, KS, Thomas and Paulette Cahn of Wilton, ME, and Randy and Lucyann Chan of Hopkins; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Mark, Charity, Freedom and Courage Chan of Oklahoma City, OK, Brady and Laura Chan of Omaha, NE, Monique Cahn of New York City, NY, Ramona Cahn of Santa Barbara, CA, Amanda Chan of Hopkins and Lindsay Chan of Hopkins; sisters-in-law, Joe and Janet Koubsky of Glenwood, Jerry and Viola Kalina of Wadena; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wencil and Mary Chan.
Mass of Christian Burial was held for Leonard on Saturday, August 8 at Church of the Sacred Heart in Glenwood with Father Peter J. Kirchner officiating. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery at Glenwood.
Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.
