To the editor:

It is just after 7 a.m. on a beautiful Saturday morning and I am just one of several volunteers walking downtown Alexandria. We are removing purple ribbons from lampposts. These purple ribbons were a community call to “Paint the Town Purple” and to bring a focus to the Relay For Life of Douglas County.

I am amazed and pleased at all the businesses with purple displays in their windows! But there is no reason for me to be amazed as I reflect on what took place the evening before.

More than 700 people gathered at Citizen’s Field on July 10 in celebration of the hope that cancer will be eliminated. Forty-eight teams, with the support of local businesses and other community members, raised in excess of $104,000 that will be used to support the lifesaving mission of the American Cancer Society in our community. Not only did we “Paint the Town Purple,” we celebrated 118 cancer survivors at the event, remembered those lost to the disease and we vowed to fight back against the disease. I am so proud to belong to a community that cares! Thank you.
