The Otto Bremer Foundation awarded Douglas County Hospice with a $15,000 grant to develop and implement a community awareness and educational program.
The objective of the new program is to increase hospice’s awareness, referrals and funding sources to levels that would ensure long-term growth and sustainability.
Douglas County and surrounding communities will benefit from the awareness program as it will provide essential information about end-of-life options and programs for themselves and their families, according to local hospice leaders.
This knowledge will help families make informed decisions regarding care and support of their loved ones during a very stressful and challenging time, they added.
Medical professionals will also benefit as they will have additional resources to help them determine when patients should be referred to hospice.
The new program will include a new website, new brochures and support material, increased educational programs, and public relations and public service announcements.
Awareness of the hospice program among the community and medical professionals is important to help ensure that patients and their families have the end-of-life care options that will bring them comfort, said local hospice leaders.
About Otto Bremer
To ensure that his personal commitment would carry on, Otto Bremer created the Otto Bremer Foundation in 1944 to meet the unique needs of communities in Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin.
Over the years, Otto Bremer’s other legacy, the Bremer Banks, owned by the foundation and bank employees, have provided the resources essential to fund the foundation’s grant-making activities.
Leveraging dividends from the bank, the foundation creatively responds to changing community needs by giving nearly $30 million annually to respond to needs that are unique to each community – listening to local voices, convening residents around common issues and responding flexibly to community requests.
