The Alexandria Area gymnastics team had a great showing at the Special Olympics State Summer Games in Minnetonka on June 19-20.

Rhythmic and artistic teams from around Minnesota competed in the meet with gender, age and level of skill divisions. The event began with an opening march and ended with Miss Minnesota Teen handing out awards.

Sarah Abbott took home a lot of those awards by winning gold in five events. Abbott finished first in her ball, ribbon, rope, hoop and all-around routines. Heidi Goodin took home gold in her rope routine and silver in the ball routine.

In the artistic category, it was Stephanie Braud who took home gold on the balance beam. She also finished with a silver medal in the floor exercise and fourth in the vault.

The Alex Area gymnastics team is coached by Karyn Sportel, Jill Jerdee, Deb Braud and Allyson Estes. The team is looking for athletes in both the rhythmic and artistic events. Anyone interested in viewing the routines and learning more about the program can call Sportel at (320) 852-7664.

Those interested in helping out with the golf program can also contact Sportel. The local team practices from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. The group is looking for people to be unified partners in either a three-hole or nine-hole competition in an alternate shot format.

The Alexandria firemen and law enforcement will be helping out the local Special Olympics program, as well. The two departments will play a softball game, starting at 5:30 p.m. on August 5.

The game will be played prior to the Beetles game that night with part of the proceeds going toward the local Special Olympic teams. The biggest current contributors to the team are Nordic Trails Golf Club, Carlos Lions and Tastefully Simple.
