Legion romps on Willmar 10-1 in District play

The Garden Center/Fat Daddy’s Alexandria American Legion baseball team traveled to Willmar on Tuesday night and opened its District 7 league play with a 10-1 win.

Alexandria scored three runs in the top of the first inning off of RBI singles from Ross Thompson and Shawn Krueger and never looked back.

The Willmar hitters never really threatened to make a comeback as they were only able to muster two hits on the entire night.

Colin Erickson started on the mound, throwing six innings of no-hit baseball. He walked five and struck out ten Willmar hitters.

Kyle Bany entered in relief and threw the final three innings. He allowed just one run, unearned, on two hits while striking out three.

“Our pitchers threw really well,” said Kevin Engebretson, “and our defense once again played awesome behind them.”

The team from Alexandria pounded out 12 hits on the night, with eight different players collecting at least one hit.

Zac Beireis, Karl Brezina, Ross Thompson, and Shawn Krueger all had two hits apiece. Beireis, Thompson, and Krueger all had two RBIs each. Dalton Leuschke had a single, three walks, and two runs scored.

“It really was a total team effort,” said Engebretson. “Lots of guys contributed to the win. Hopefully we can keep playing good team baseball and keep it rolling on into the weekend.”

The Alexandria nine will travel up north to Grand Rapids for a tournament over the weekend, where they will compete against teams from Richfield, Minnesota, Oconto Falls, Wisconsin, Forest Lake, Minnesota, and Thunder Bay, Canada.
