Letter - Help to feed hungry families

People in our community go hungry each day. It could be your neighbor, colleague, the person you see crossing the street or somebody that your child goes to school with.

A recent study done by Second Harvest Heartland analyzed data in the state of Minnesota and western Wisconsin to determine how many missed meals there are in various counties. According to the study, 16 percent of all meals are missed in Douglas County in a year. In our opinion, that’s 16 percent too many!

The upcoming summer months are particularly difficult for our local food shelves. Our school children are off for the summer, which means they have no access to subsidized meal programs otherwise offered at school. This forces more and more families to access the local food shelf. In fact, food shelves have recently experienced a 30 percent increase in visits.

Bremer recognizes these needs and is once again launching a month-long campaign in June to “Take Action Against Hunger.” During this campaign, we are asking you, the citizens of the Alexandria community, to help us raise funds to end hunger. Donations can be made at any Bremer Bank location, at Bremer.com or by sending a check made payable to Second Harvest Heartland at 1140 Gervais Ave., St. Paul, MN 55109. Additionally, if you make a donation of $5 or more, you can receive a free, reusable, grocery tote available at any Bremer Bank location. (If making your donation through the mail or online, please bring a copy of the receipt or check with you to the bank to receive your reusable grocery tote.)

By making a donation today, you will help us raise enough money for Second Harvest Heartland to provide food and grocery products to feed many families and children in our region that are otherwise left without.
