Correction
A letter to the editor by Margaret Schoeneck in the June 5 issue contained misinformation.
A letter to the editor by Margaret Schoeneck in the June 5 issue contained misinformation. The bill she referred to, SB-2099, is not currently before Congress. It was introduced back in 2000, referred to a committee and never came to a vote. The bill would have required gun owners to register their handguns but it had no provision for listing guns on federal income tax returns. Also, the claim that such a bill could become law without another vote is untrue. In order to pass, the bill would have had to have been approved by both houses of Congress and signed into law.
