An 82-year-old Starbuck man who was a past state commander of the VFW died after a two-vehicle crash north of Glenwood Tuesday.
Walter G. Larson was one of the drivers in a broadside collision that happened at about 1 p.m.
Larson was driving his 1991 Chevrolet pickup on Pope County Road 28 when it collided with a 2000 Buick Century on Highway 29 driven by Lajeana R. Johnson, 58, of Glenwood, according to the State Patrol.
Larson, who was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle, was taken to the St. Cloud Hospital where he died on Tuesday night, according to the State Patrol.
Johnson was taken to the Glacial Ridge Hospital and later transferred to the Douglas County Hospital where she is listed in stable condition.
Her 17-year-old daughter and passenger, Janelle K. Johnson of Glenwood, was seriously injured. She was transferred to the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis where she is listed in satisfactory condition.
Both Johnsons were wearing seat belts.
Larson, a retired teacher, grew up in Starbuck and served in Japan near the end of World War II. He was the state commander of the VFW in 2005-2006.
