Softball: Laker girls end season in 12-inning loss

A strong season for the Minnewaska softball team came to an end earlier than the Lakers wanted it to after a 3-1, 12-inning loss to Paynesville last Thursday night.

It should come as no surprise that the game between these two teams to advance in the Section 6AA playoffs came down to a 12-inning marathon. The Bulldogs and Lakers split two games during the regular season as Minnewaska upended them in the final standings to earn a West Central South Conference title.

Last Thursday, it was the Bulldogs who won the rubber game after Jessica Klein and Jessica Lieser each had RBI singles in the 12th inning.

Minnewaska put two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the inning but the threat was ended when Whitney Woehler induced a ground ball to end the game.

The Lakers’ Laura Paulson took the loss. She threw all 12 innings, allowing 10 hits and two walks, while striking out six. Woehler held Minnewaska to just six hits in the game. She walked one and struck out three.

Minnewaska ends the season with a 20-3 record and a 15-1 mark in the WCC-South.
