Through Alexandria School District 206 Community Education, the Alexandria Area Adult Basic Education (ABE) Consortium is collaborating with Alexandria Technical College (ATC) to offer two new summer courses at the college: Pre-Nursing and Academic Success for English as a Second Language (ESL) Learners.
Since both of these nine-week courses are offered at no cost to the first 15 qualified applicants, early registration is recommended. Registration deadline is June 8.
The Pre-Nursing course will be held at ATC Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 9:30 p.m. June 15 through August 12. The pre-nursing curriculum jointly developed by ATC and ABE is meant to be a “bridge” between Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) training.
Students can develop the skills and knowledge essential to succeed in the collegiate academic setting. The curriculum includes medical terminology, basic nursing skills, reading, writing and math for healthcare occupations, as well as information on college nursing programs and nursing career options.
Since the program builds the academic, technical and soft skills of participants, those who complete the class will not only be better prepared to take college coursework, they will also be better equipped healthcare employees.
Alexandria ABE will also offer an ESL course at ATC this summer entitled “Academic Success for ESL Learners.” This nine-week, free course is designed for students whose native language is not English. It will focus on the reading and writing skills needed to succeed in college level fundamental reading and writing courses.
This class will be held at ATC Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 16 through August 13.
To register for either of these courses or for more information, contact Sandy Schroepfer, Alexandria ABE coordinator, at (320) 762-0627 or sschroep@alexandria.k12.mn.us by June 8.
