Softball: Card girls fall to Eagles

St. Cloud Apollo ended Alexandria's win streak Tuesday night as the Cardinals lost 3-2.

St. Cloud Apollo handed Alexandria its second loss of the season at the hand of the Eagles, ending the Cardinals’ win streak and dropping the Redbirds to 10-3 in Central Lakes Conference softball.

The 3-2 loss, however, doesn’t keep the Cards out of contention for the CLC title.

“The winner of our final home game (yesterday, Thursday) against Rocori will be the conference champion because of the way the points work in the CLC,” said head coach Bob Cunniff.

Jacque Brown suffered her first loss of the season as a varsity pitcher, allowing 11 hits and three runs, all earned, while walking one and striking out two.

The Cards trailed 2-0 before they scored in the fourth inning on a solo home run over the left field fence by Sam Dale.

Apollo added a run in the top of the fifth to go ahead 3-1 before Alexandria drove in one more in the bottom of the seventh as Allie Thul scored on a single by Gracie Bruzek.

“We had runners on in every inning but the fifth, but we just couldn’t bring them home,” said Cunniff.

“Apollo has a very good pitcher in Kaci Parsons,” he added. Parson struck out six and scattered six hits in the game.

Alexandria opens Subsection softball action on Tuesday, with the site yet to be determined.
