Baseball: Cards fall in tight game

A pair of comebacks wasn't enough for Alexandria as the Cards fell 7-6 to St. Cloud Apollo

The Alexandria baseball team lost a heartbreaker in the bottom of the sixth inning to St. Cloud Apollo on Tuesday night.

The Cardinals held a 6-5 lead after scoring three in the top of the sixth. Tyler Iverson drove in the go-ahead run with a ground ball to second base. The Eagles bounced right back in the bottom of the inning by bringing across two unearned runs. Shawn Krueger took the tough-luck loss after coming into the game in the bottom of the inning.

Alexandria hit and pitched well enough to win, but the Cardinals could not overcome six errors committed on defense. That led to three unearned runs in the game as the Eagles took advantage of the extra outs.

The Cardinals have proven to be resilient all season and they showed that again on Tuesday night. The sixth-inning comeback was their second of the game. St. Cloud Apollo scored three in the top of the first to take an early lead. Alexandria answered two innings later with a three-run inning of its own in the third. Karl Brezina got the big hit with a bases-loaded single that drove in Dalton Leuschke and Colin Erickson to tie the game.

Apollo had an answer for every run the Cardinals made, though. The Eagles scored lone runs in the fourth and fifth to take back the lead. Things could have been worse but with the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth, Kyle Bany came into the game and allowed just one run to score by striking out three in the inning.

“It was a great job by the junior pitcher to keep the game within reach,” head coach Russ Hinrichs said.

The Cardinals took advantage of that in the sixth, but the Eagles had the answer in the bottom of the inning to pick up the win. Alexandria fell to 6-5 in the Central Lakes Conference and 8-7 overall.
