To the editor:
In 2009, it is still common for individuals with a mental illness to hide that illness. The stigmatization of those with mental illness continues to be prevalent. However, the efforts to reduce stigma are growing in strength.
Perhaps many people think that those with severe mental illness are locked up in facilities that resemble movie images such as Girl Interrupted or One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. This is far from the reality and does not do justice to the efforts made by consumer activist groups, as well as mental health providers.
The same person who would most likely have been locked up for months or years is now living and working independently. Unfortunately, that movie-like image does not go away and continues to influence how many may view mental illness as well as how those with mental illness view themselves.
I think the main point here is that people are capable of spectacular things and having a mental illness does not negate success.
Region IV South Assertive Community Treatment will again be hosting an open house on May 20. This is our effort to work with both service providers in the area, as well as individuals who utilize those services.
