Support the local Red Cross on World Red Cross Day Friday, May 8

Celebrate World Red Cross Day on May 8 by making an appointment to donate blood or volunteer at your local Red Cross chapter.

Celebrate World Red Cross Day on May 8 by making an appointment to donate blood or volunteer at your local Red Cross chapter. The American Red Cross relies on volunteer blood donors to meet the needs of patients across the United States.

As one of the nation’s leading humanitarian organizations, the mission of the Red Cross is to help save lives, relieve suffering and restore hope at home and around and the world. Established in 1940, the Red Cross blood program now collects about half of the blood needed each year in the United States – about six million pints.

“Nearly 5 million people need blood transfusions each year,” said Geoff Kaufmann, CEO of the local Red Cross North Central Blood Services Region. “Your donations help the Red Cross ensure that the right blood will be available for the right patient at the right time.”

Upcoming blood donation opportunities include:

•May 21, from 1:30 to 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 411 Hawthorne St., Alexandria.

•May 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 411 Hawthorne St., Alexandria.

To donate blood, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543) or visit givebloodgivelife.org to make an appointment or for more information.
