A mother and her newborn baby are safe, thanks to the family dog, after a fire broke out at a home north of Detroit Lakes Tuesday morning.

The Callaway and Detroit Lakes fire departments responded to the fire at the home of Tim and Doreen Hauge located at 23938 Highview Oaks Road in rural Detroit Lakes.

The Hauge's duaghter, Rachel, and her newborn were in the home at the time of the fire, as was the family dog, Miss Muffin.

Doreen Hauge said her daughter was asleep when the dog's barking awoke her, and she got the baby and dog and was able to get out of the house.

Unfortunately, a pet rabbit and bird were left in the house.

"Everybody's OK," Doreen Hague said. "That's what matters."
