Arbor Day took center stage in a couple of events in the area on Friday. Students from Miltona Science Magnet Elementary School presented a Dr. Seuss-themed play about Earth Day and the importance of planting trees. They performed at Carlos (shown), Garfield and Miltona schools. Alexandria city officials (left to right) Bill Thoennes, park director, Bryan Bjorgaard, public works coordinator, and Mike Weber, city planner, planted a tree in Fillmore Park. Because of the city’s efforts to preserve and plant trees, the Arbor Day Foundation has designated Alexandria as a Tree City USA, one of 3,310 such communities in the nation.
