Minnewaska split a pair of outings on the baseball diamond early last week, defeating BOLD 6-5 Monday and falling 10-5 to Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa on Tuesday.
Waska 6, BOLD 5
“We hit the ball well early to take the lead and then our bats cooled off,” said Minnewaska head coach Chris Bennes of his team’s play against the BOLD Warriors. “We were fortunate that Mike Whittemore took control of the game on the mound and got better every inning.
“It was a good conference win for us in harsh conditions.”
Whittemore went the distance for the Lakers, allowing just five runs, three earned, on four hits, striking out seven.
Shane Bosek had a two-run single in the third, highlighting a four-run inning for Minnewaska.
BBE 10, Waska 5
The third inning doomed the Lakers, who fell to the Jaguars 10-5 in non-conference baseball Tuesday.
Minnewaska had jumped to a 2-0 lead before disaster struck for Dustin Helmick, who took the loss in two and a third innings, giving up all seven of those runs, although just three were earned.
“We started very well, but completely lost our focus and composure in the third inning,” said Bennes. “We did not make routine plays, allowed BBE to control the game, and gave up seven runs.
“We need to change how we are approaching each game. We tried a few different line-up possibilities, but we still need to find the best line-up for us to be really successful.”
Trenton Berg had three hits for the Lakers, driving in a pair of runs, while Whittemore had two hits, both doubles.

The Minnewaska baseball team split two games late last week with an 8-2 win against Sauk Centre on Friday after falling 4-3 to Lac qui Parle Valley on Thursday.
The Lakers used five strong innings from Trenton Berg and 12 hits to secure the win against Sauk Centre. Berg helped himself on offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Alex Henricks also had a big date at the plate with three hits and two runs scored.
The Lakers played well the previous day, as well. This time it was just not enough to pick up the win against LQPV.
Taylor Kollman started on the mound and threw six strong innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits. The Eagles added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, which turned out to be the winning run. Mike Whittemore scored in the bottom of the seventh, but the Lakers could not push the tying run around.
Minnewaska moved to 3-6 overall with the split.
