Applications are due April 27 for grants of up to $8,000 from the Perpich Center for Arts Education and up to $2,000 from the Minnesota State Arts Board for a two-year program to strengthen arts education in schools or school districts and communities.

Each year since 1983, the Comprehensive Arts Planning or CAPP grants have been made to several school sites. Forms and instructions for submitting the applications are available on the Perpich Center Web site, www.pcae.k12.

The first year of the program a committee is formed that gathers data in the schools and community on what arts education exists there, including its resources and challenges. Then a five-year plan is written.

In the second year, implementation of the plan begins, including a residency with a teaching artist who works with students and teachers in a specific art area.

The result is a performance or art show for the community, highlighting what was learned during the residency.
