The Cardinal boys’ tennis team continues to run through its competition with its seventh straight win to start the season on a cold and windy Monday evening.
Alexandria traveled to Fergus Falls and came away with a 6-1 victory over the Otters to move to 4-0 in Central Lakes Conference play.
Reggie Ronning, Connor Illies and Luke Eberly all picked up straight-set wins in the singles lineup to remain unbeaten on the season.
The Cardinals swept through the doubles lineup with come-from-behind wins at Nos. 1 and 2 to secure the team win.
“Fergus has had our number when it comes to the doubles positions, so we beefed up ours to try and counter that a bit and the guys responded,” head coach Dave Ronning said. “We did struggle a bit at first and second doubles to start the match, losing the first set at each, but we got settled in and came back to get the next two sets at both spots.”
Jake Otterness and Marvin Wensman persevered for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win in the No. 1 spot. Cody Nelson and Kevin Desautels also came back from a 4-6 loss in the first to win 6-2, 6-3. Matt Peterson and Ben LeVahn took care of business with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
“We can still play a lot better tennis and the guys know it,” Ronning said. “They have to go out and play with confidence and just let it happen. If we do hit our potential at every spot it will be fun tennis to watch.”
