The American Dairy Association of Douglas County held its annual dairy princess banquet on April 4. Samantha Massmann, Meg Hintzen and Anna Wagner were crowned 2009 dairy princesses.
Massman, daughter of Robert and Roxanne Massmann of Osakis, is sponsored by Osakis Creamery Association. Hintzen, daughter of Leonard and Jodi Hintzen, is also sponsored by Osakis Creamery Association. Wagner, daughter of Ben and Jean Wagner of Brandon, is sponsored by NFO/Organic Valley.
Dairy princesses serve as goodwill ambassadors for the dairy industry, appearing at various promotional events and speaking to children, consumers and the media. They also participate in parades throughout the county.
The new dairy princesses will advance to a training seminar to be held in May at the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph. In addition to learning skills that can be used for the rest of their lives, they will compete for 12 spots to advance to Princess of the Milky Way competition. At all levels of competition they are judged on their communication skills, personality, enthusiasm for dairy promotion and general knowledge of the dairy industry.
