FCA Jeff and Jackie Leslie walk/run April 25
The annual event raises funds to help students experience leadership camps
The local Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) chapter will host its annual 5K and 1 Mile Run/Walk fundraiser on April 25 at Geneva Camp at 8:30 a.m.
The Alexandria FCA has assisted nearly 1,000 middle school and high school students in experiencing sports and leadership camps. The run/walk fundraiser has been held since 1981 to help make that experience possible.
The “Jog-a-thon” began as a memorial to Jeff and Jackie Leslie and was switched to the 5K and 1 Mile Run/Walk in 2008.
In addition to the camping activities, the Alexandria chapter sponsors a number of events in the community, including the kickoff picnic in late August and the special breakfast programs immediately preceding the Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter holidays. The local FCA also hosts the golf scramble at the Geneva Golf Course in June. This event includes a dinner and prizes. All these events are open to the public. Those interested can contact Larry Novotny at (320) 762-5154.
The Alexandria FCA chapter is one of more than 6,000 in the nation. A record number of 1,637,225 participants were reported at 34,588 FCA events in 2008. Weekly huddle meetings for students are available at both Discovery Middle School and Jefferson High School.
Many people have been recognized over the years for helping to make the Alexandria chapter a success. Memorial funds have been established for Wayne Fleischer (1989), Erik Movold (1995) and Mike Kugler (2000). Tax-deductible donations to FCA may be designated to any of these memorial funds at any time.
The local chapter is governed by a board of directors, and the monthly meetings are open to the public. Anyone interested in information on the Jeff and Jackie Leslie 5K and 1 Mile Run/Walk or wishing to get involved with FCA activities can contact Ed at (320) 763-4445 or Tim at (320) 846-5303.
