100 YEARS AGO

April 1909

A gentleman who was at the Rose Creamery when the cream came in said the creamery will “make” that town. He was surprised by the number of new barns in Spruce Hill Township and the amount of cream that was coming in… Mr. Sessions has purchased several lots on Lake Darling from L.J. Brown and offers the use of them for a public park providing he get some assistance in clearing up the grounds… When news flashed over the wires telling of the suffering of the starving and homeless in Southern Italy, Uncle Sam responded with $800,000, $500,000 of which will go toward the building of homes for the homeless. Ship after ship is being loaded with lumber and manpower to do the job.

50 YEARS AGO

April 1959

John Anglin, high school mathematics instructor, has been selected for a National Association for the Advancement of Science fellowship. He will attend Indiana University under a program leading to a master of arts teacher’s degree in mathematics… Judy Nustad has been chosen 1959 Girl-Stater for Alexandria. Carol Lamb was named alternate… Helen Schaeffer and Bonnie Kittleson of Slayton have purchased Club 29 from Mr. and Mrs. Donald Drum… The Inn of the 6th Happiness, starring Ingrid Bergman, Robert Donat and Curt Jergens, is now showing at the Andria Theater. The Whole Truth, with Stewart Granger and Donna Reed, is featured at the State Theater… The grand opening of The Corral at Nelson will be held on April 21.

25 YEARS AGO

April 1984

Ruth Partington and Illinois author Signe Evangeline Chell were shown reviewing pictures, which brought the two of them together through their common interest in Minnesota’s first Swedish settler… Former Alexandria graduate and state high school basketball tournament official Bill Herzog, now an official in the Big 10 and other college games, was pictured with two of his crew members… Al Edenloff, a recent graduate of Moorhead State who worked last summer as a special assignment reporter for Alexandria Newspapers, has now joined its staff… Leah Marie Elderbroek, age 4 of Glenwood, will be a contestant in the Minnesota Little Miss Pageant in July… About 300 people attended the Kiwanis Prayer Breakfast to hear a message from guest of honor ex-governor Al Quie.

10 YEARS AGO

April 1999

Hannah Owen of Alexandria is the winner of a $50 savings bond and a T-shirt for placing first in the 2nd grade level of the Reading Rainbow Writers and Illustrators Contest, sponsored by Pioneer Public TV… Alexandria Cardinal boys’ swimming coach Mark Storhaug was honored as the Minnesota Class AA Coach of the Year. After taking 2nd place in 1998, the boys won the 1999 state championship by posting a perfect season… John (Perkins) Hawkes will appear in an episode of X-Files entitled “Milagro.” He portrays a struggling writer whose words have an influence on the world around him… With the help of District 206, Community Education and the Runestone Education District have turned the Klothes Kloset into a learning experience to teach teens work skills and how to give back to the community.
