A rural Detroit Lakes man died Monday as a result of injuries suffered in a chase with law enforcement, according to a news release from the Becker County Sheriff’s Department.
The victim has been identified as Jason Douglas McPherson, 36, who resided at 718 Lake Forest Circle, Detroit Lakes. McPherson was once part owner of J&K Marine in Detroit Lakes.
A deputy saw a blue 2004 Kia driving at an excessive speed on 130th Street around 4:30 p.m., the release states. The driver failed to yield at a stop sign at a railroad crossing as he passed the deputy.
In the ensuing chase, McPherson turned north onto 270th Avenue and then cut across a stubble field. He struck a drainage ditch, causing the vehicle to flip. McPherson was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.
McPherson was taken to St. Mary’s Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes, where he died shortly before 6 p.m. The Sheriff's Office is awaiting toxicology reports to determine if alcohol was a factor.
McPherson's driving privileges had been revoked.
