Letter – Lift nuclear power ban in Minnesota

Thanks to Representative Torrey Westrom, R-Elbow Lake, for his vote to remove the prohibition on expansion of nuclear power in Minnesota. The measure failed 9-12 on March 27 before the House Energy Policy and Finance Division. Nonetheless, the hearing provided opportunity to educate policy-makers and lay the foundation to revisit the issue.

We’re disappointed and frustrated by the shortsightedness of the existing state policy to not even allow consideration of additional nuclear power among the menu of energy choices. Removing Minnesota’s outdated ban is important for our state’s energy future. Nuclear power must be an option to ensure reliable and competitively priced electricity for all Minnesotans.
