Ashby girls' basketball team falls to Underwood in 6A-South

An up and down season for the Ashby girls’ basketball team came to an end in its opening game of the Section 6A Tournament last Thursday night.

The Arrows matched up against Little Eight Conference foe Underwood in a battle of the Nos. 4 and 5 seeds in the south sub-section. The two teams had split their previous games this season, but it was the Rockets who would take the rubber game with a 56-45 win.

Amanda Johnson had 23 points and 13 rebounds, and Josie Kent scored 10 off the bench. Andrea Moe also chipped in with seven points. That was not enough to overcome a huge discrepancy at the free throw line between the two teams.

Underwood shot 32 of 52 from the line, compared to 14 of 21 for the Arrows. That, coupled with an Underwood defense that held Ashby’s Emily Johnson scoreless, made it difficult for the Arrows to pick up the win.

“Hats off to coach [Brian] Hovland for doing a good job preparing his girls for us,” head coach John Kent said. “I can’t thank my girls enough for all their hard work, dedication and spirit this season. Tonight just wasn’t our night.”

Ashby ends the season with an overall record of 12-10. They finished third in the LEC with a 7-5 mark, behind Brandon-Evansville and Parkers Prairie.
