The Faction Boardshop in Alexandria is hosting its 6th annual snowboard contest.

The Faction Challenge Jump and Rail Jam Snowboard Contest will take place Saturday, February 28 at Andes Tower Hills.

Registration for what is considered the largest snowboard contest in western Minnesota will take place between 10 and 11 a.m. Saturday morning.

The contest is set to take place at noon. The awards ceremony is scheduled for approximately 4:30 p.m.

There were 74 competitors in last year’s contest and this year, organizers are hoping to reach at least 80.

There is a $20 entry fee, which can be paid during the registration period. The cost of the entry includes a ticket for a raffle drawing, food and drinks. There will be prizes for all contestants, according to Jason Lybeck, owner of The Faction Boardshop and organizer of the event.

The style of the competition will be a “jam format” and will include local and non-local competitors. The tournament is set up as a slope-style event and will include rails and jumps.

“It’s laid back, not as intense or as high pressured as some other styles of tournaments,” he said.

There will be categories for both men and women with different age classes, which are as follows:

•Women: 12 and younger class and 13 and older class.

•Men: 13 to 14 age class, 15 to 16 age class and 17 and older open class.

Trophies will be awarded in the open class for first, second and third place. Medals will be awarded for first, second and third place winners in all other categories.

Judges will base their decisions on the overall impression of each snowboarder and their ability, techniques and difficulty of the tricks they do, Lybeck explained. Judges will include Lybeck and two others.

Spectators are welcome and highly encouraged to come and watch this event, Lybeck noted.
