Alexandria boys' hockey: Section preview results in loss

Card boys’ hockey team falls to Flyers

The Cardinal boys’ hockey team lost a heartbreaker to Little Falls last Thursday night.

Alexandria had a chance to climb into a tie for the Central Lakes Conference lead. A goal by Wesley Waytashek 22 seconds into the third period was all the Flyers needed, though, as they held on for a 1-0 win.

Ben Hanowski set up the goal by starting a two-on-one break and sending a perfectly timed pass to Waytashek on the left side for the goal.

Both teams had scoring opportunities throughout the game but the play of both goaltenders made life difficult for the offenses on this night.

Michael Sperl stopped all 26 shots he faced from the Cardinals. Matt Hemingway was great as well, turning aside 36 shots on the night and giving up just the one goal. It was only the second time this season that Little Falls has been held to just one goal. Both those resulted in 1-0 victories.

“The defensive core of Marvin Wensman, Kirby Nelson, Mike Sahli, Aaron Rentschler and Scott Hennen played fantastic,” head coach Scott Woods said. “Our forwards played well also but were just unable to find the back of the net. It was a tough loss, but we look forward to battling through the playoffs for a shot at beating the Flyers in the section final.”

The loss ended an 11-game winning streak for the Cardinals. They fell to 12-3 with the loss and 8-2 in the CLC. The Flyers remain perfect with a 14-0 mark and 8-0 in the CLC.
