Red Cross offers free disaster training

West Central Minnesota Red Cross, serving Douglas, Grant and Traverse counties, is offering free disaster training to local residents.

West Central Minnesota Red Cross, serving Douglas, Grant and Traverse counties, is offering free disaster training to local residents.

Training will be held for both single family fire response volunteers, and for service to armed forces on-call telephone volunteers. Training is for anyone interested in volunteering in any of the three counties served.

Volunteers trained for single family fire response will have the option of being on call to respond locally if there is a house fire. Red Cross provides temporary, emergency shelter and funds for food and clothing for victims of house fires needing this service.

Volunteers trained for service to armed forces have the option of being on call for taking phone calls to initiate emergency communications between local families and deployed soldiers.

Both positions require volunteers to answer cellular telephones 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Volunteers have the option of being on call when it is feasible with their personal schedules.

Those interested in being trained into either position have a choice of training in Alexandria on January 28 from 6 to 10 p.m.; or in Wheaton on February 4 from 6 to 10 p.m. You must RSVP to the Red Cross office so the correct numbers of training packets are prepared.

To RSVP, either call the Red Cross office at (320) 763-3800; or e-mail redcross@rea-alp.com. Additional information can be found on the West Central MN Red Cross Web site at www.WCMNRedCross.org.
