Letter – Time to lift ban on nuclear energy

After reading a recent report on the urgent need for additional power for this area, I was surprised to hear our local ALP official say that coal was the answer.

To the editor:

After reading a recent report on the urgent need for additional power for this area, I was surprised to hear our local ALP official say that coal was the answer.

We all know that coal-fired plants emit a lot of stuff that harm our environment and we also should remember that in the wintertime we have a prevailing northwest wind. Some of our best lakes in this area are now on the impaired list for mercury content and we are advised to not consume fish from them too often.

It seems to me that our efforts should be on getting the state to lift its ban on nuclear energy and build a nuclear plant more in the center of the state to serve a wider area. This would reduce the large power loss caused by having transmission lines coming all the way from the Dakotas. Just something to think about.
