Phone scam preys upon grandparents' emotions

Authorities in Todd County are alerting residents of a phone scam.

Authorities in Todd County are alerting residents of a phone scam.

On Wednesday, a Todd County couple reported that they had received a phone call from a female caller who identified herself as their granddaughter.

The “granddaughter” told the couple that she was in Canada and had made numerous purchases there.

She told them that in order for her to cross the border, she had to pay a “duty fee” on the purchases so she needed them to send her $3,500.

The caller was very convincing and emotional at times, but the couple was able to determine that the whole thing was a scam and did not send money.

Todd County authorities’ advice: Anyone who receives calls similar to this should be very cautious. Make sure to verify that the caller is who he or she claims to be.
