Dumping snow on roads is illegal

Douglas County Public Works reminds everyone, including commercial snow removal operators, that it is against state law to deposit snow onto a public roadway.

Douglas County Public Works reminds everyone, including commercial snow removal operators, that it is against state law to deposit snow onto a public roadway.

Examples include state highways, county roads, township roads and city streets. Dumping or plowing snow onto or across roadways can create slippery areas, frozen ruts or bumps, which could contribute to motor vehicle or pedestrian accidents.

Minnesota Statute 160.2715 prohibits the plowing, blowing, shoveling or otherwise placing of snow from parking lots, driveways and sidewalks onto public roadways. This includes ditches, roadsides and boulevards.

The public is cautioned that violations are misdemeanors and civil liability can extend to both the property owner and the person or company who placed the snow improperly.
