Volunteer opportunities abound in lakes area

Many volunteer opportunities are available in Douglas and Pope counties.

Tax clinic volunteers – Volunteers are needed to help as greeters, preparers, reviewers, screeners and food coordinators. Call Randi at (218) 685-4486 or e-mail at rpajari@wcma.org for more information or call the United Way at (320) 763-4840.

District 206 Volunteer Program – Volunteers are needed who are willing to help with the Elementary Spelling Bee on Friday, January 23 from 9-11 a.m. Volunteers are also needed at the District Spelling Bee on January 30 from 8-10 a.m. Other opportunities exist with the Masterpiece Art program, Pacer Puppets, Junior Achievement. Alexandria adult literacy orientation –February 3 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Runestone Regional Learning Center. Also, 10 hour basic literacy tutor training workshop February 13 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. and February 14 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call Sandy at (320) 762-0627.

United Way Allocations – Volunteers are needed the nights of April 13 and 14 to serve on the allocations committee, which listens to presentations by agencies and determines what allocations will be made to agencies requesting assistance. Call United Way at (320) 763-4840.

Elder Network - Care team volunteers are needed to drive seniors to appointments and errands. Respite team volunteers are needed to sit with a care receiver while the caregiver takes a short break. Peer counselor volunteers are needed to visit an older adult for reminiscing and encouragement. Call Mary Jane at (320) 763-9084.

Outreach Food Shelf in Alexandria, Glenwood Senior Nutrition Center volunteers are needed. Call Randi at (218) 685-4486 or e-mail at rpajari@wcma.org for more information.

Foster Grandparent Program – Volunteers must be at least 60 years old, love to help children learn and be willing to commit 15 hours per week. There is a small stipend for gas and time. Call Pat at (320) 293-0692.

District 206 Mentorship Program – Needs mentors to help students or to be a lunch buddy. If interested, call (320) 763-0894 for more information.
