To the members of the Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department:

I would like to offer both my most sincere appreciation and profound apologies to the Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department and these exceptional men who help make Alexandria a first-class place to live.

My appreciation is quite simply for their saving my home last week, and the apology is for taking this long to appreciate who they are and what they do. After living here for almost 60 years, you would think I could have figured it out before now, but it’s just one of those things we take for granted, and even assume is our right, when we should be showing our gratitude and expressing our appreciation.

It’s a shame that some of us slower folks have to be literally blown up and on fire before we take the time to appreciate the obvious.

So, thanks for what you do and sorry I haven’t said it before and more often!
