Frederick leads Nordic skiers
No times were kept during season opener at St. Cloud Tech Invite
The Alexandria Nordic ski team got its first taste of action in a meet last Thursday as the Cardinals traveled to St. Cloud to take part in the Tech invite.
No times were kept, but ribbons were given to the top 10 finalists, who advanced through a series of heat races. Aaron Frederick was the top finisher for Alexandria after coming in ninth in the varsity boys’ competition. Melissa Gromatka came in fifth in the junior varsity girls’ division.
The meet consisted of 1K heat races with 10 skiers in each heat as the top five finishers advanced further into the competition. The final 10 skiers then raced in the feature race.
It was a great opportunity for head coach Steve Devereaux to get the jitters out for many of his new skiers.
“Some of the new skiers were nervous,” Deveraux said. “But we told them that they have to have their first meet sometime, so you might as well get it out of the way early.”
Jimmy Lovrien is one of those first-year skiers. Lovrien advanced to the second heat with a top five finish in the first race of his career.
“The fact that he advanced through the first round was pretty awesome,” Devereaux said.
The day was not all good news for the first-year head coach as he lost one of the top skiers for his girls’ team. Amanda Schmitz is still battling a hip injury that she struggled with last season. Schmitz advanced through the first heat but had to withdraw from the second heat midway through the race. The injury should cause Schmitz to miss some time this season as Devereaux focuses on getting her healthy to help the team in the future.
