Want to save on your energy bill?
Here’s a bright idea: Get a free compact fluorescent light (CFL), courtesy of Douglas County.
The county received 1,000 CFL bulbs last week for winning a national “Change A Light” contest – an honor given to just six counties in the United States.
It did it by gathering the most pledges from residents and county employees who agreed to replace their regular light bulbs with CFLs.
The contest was sponsored by the National Association of Counties (NaCO), the Environmental Protection Agency and Office Depot, which provided the free CFLs.
The county started giving away the bulbs last Friday during a kickoff event at the Douglas County Historical Society. Two representatives of Office Depot, Nancy McCourt and Brian Bram, presented the bulbs to the county.
Those who registered for the bulbs with the NaCO are asked to contact county commissioner Bev Bales at (320) 852-7335 or e-mail her at bevb@embarqmail.com.
The remaining bulbs will be distributed throughout Douglas County in the coming weeks.
The county commissioners urge everyone to replace their old bulbs with the CFLs to save money and help the environment.
Collectively, the 1,000 CFL lights are expected to generate a savings of $70,000 in reduced utility bills and bulb replacement costs.
