Swimming and diving: Splashers end season
Cardinals finish sixth at Section 8AA meet

The Cardinal girls’ swimming and diving team wrapped up the 2008 season by finishing sixth out of eight teams at the Section 8AA Championships this past weekend in Elk River.
Sam Thompson and Rosey Erickson each made it to the finals in two events to help lead Alexandria past Bemidji and Moorhead. Thompson placed 14th in the 200-yard freestyle and seventh in the 100-yard freestyle.
Erickson had the highest finish of the weekend for the Cardinals when she ended in fifth place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.57. She also finished 14th in the 100-yard butterfly.
Joining them in the finals on Saturday were Sarah Sater, who finished 12th in diving with a score of 244.25, Zoe Weltzin with a 16th place finish in the 100-yard butterfly and Sarah Peper, who finished 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The Cardinals also sent three relay teams on to the finals in the 200-yard medley relay and the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. Alexandria finished the weekend with 118 points as a team to secure the sixth-place finish.
Maple Grove won the Class AA state championship last season coming out of section 8AA. They successfully defended that section title again, winning with a team score of 543 to hold off Elk River and Brainerd.
