The District 206 School Board has begun an activity at elementary schools across the district to encourage name suggestions from students, but would also like to hear suggestions about a name from any community members that wish to share their ideas.
A district “naming committee” of community representatives has been established to coordinate the process and review name submissions.
School board policy provides guidelines for naming the new school. Names should retain meaning for students and citizens over the life of the building.
Names may reflect:
• Geographic or historic features of an area.
• Unique characteristics or features of the area.
• Significant historical or social events.
• Concepts central to democracy.
• People who have made lasting contributions to society at local, national or international levels.
The goal of the naming committee is to review all submissions and arrive at four possible new elementary school names to submit for school board consideration.
A board decision is anticipated at the regular meeting on January 26, 2009.
Names may be submitted by completing a New Elementary School Name Public Input Form on the School District 206 Web site at www.alexandria.k12.mn.us/nametheschool.
Forms will also be available at all school offices across the district. Completed forms must be submitted by December 23 in order to be considered by the naming committee.
