Veterans throughout the nation – and right here in Douglas County – were honored with many different kinds of ceremonies on Tuesday, Veterans Day.

Veterans throughout the nation – and right here in Douglas County – were honored with many different kinds of ceremonies on Tuesday, Veterans Day.

In Nelson, a ninth annual Veterans Day Balloon Release paid tribute to all those who have served in the military, past and present.

In Osakis, a solemn ceremony took place at the Osakis High School Auditorium that included the advancing of the colors (flags), invocation, a concert choir performance, a Veteran’s Day message, a flag-folding ceremony, and music from the concert band.

In Alexandria, a Veterans Day program was held at Living Waters Church. Highlights included a silent prayer in memory of soldiers who have died, prisoners of war and those missing in action; an address by Major Timothy Kemp of the Minnesota Army National Guard; and stirring patriotic songs – America the Beautiful, God Bless America and Taps. The service was a reminder that freedom isn’t free.
