Free CFL bulbs to be given away in Douglas County

Douglas County Commissioner Bev Bales reports that the 1,000 light bulbs won by Douglas County in the Change-a-Light Contest have arrived.

Douglas County Commissioner Bev Bales reports that the 1,000 light bulbs won by Douglas County in the Change-a-Light Contest have arrived.

Douglas County placed first nationally for counties under 50,000 population. “For the win,” said Bales, “we received 1,000 free CFL light bulbs from Office Depot.”

The kickoff to distribute them will be Friday, November 14 at the Douglas County Historical Society, 1219 South Nokomis, in Alexandria, at 4:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend this event and attendees will be given a free bulb.

All Douglas County residents who registered with the National Association of Counties and changed one or more bulbs will receive bulbs also. If you were among those who participated through the National Association of Counties, call Bales at (320) 852-7335 or e-mail her at bevb@embarqmail.com.

Several people registered directly with the county. “If you did, you need not call or e-mail, as we have a record of your name,” said Bales.

Douglas County officials are continuing to promote the changing of bulbs to these energy-efficient, money-saving environmentally-friendly bulbs. “We will be changing all the bulbs in the Douglas County Historical building at this kickoff,” Bales said.

A motto for the Change-A-Light promotion is “Change a light, change the world, change in your pocket.”
