Cards fall to Knights in section championship

With a trip to the State Class AAA tournament on the line, the Cardinal volleyball team saw their 2-1 margin dissipate against St. Michael-Albertville as they dropped the Section 8AAA championship in a 3-2 nailbiter Friday night at St. Cloud Tech.

With the scored tied at 20 in the fourth game, the Knights came away with five straight points for a win and to even the match at 2-2.

In the fifth game and deciding game, the Cardinals trailed 14-10, but rallied back to tie it up 14-14. The Knights tried twice to close out the game, but Alexandria’s defense stood tall, giving them back the lead at 17-16.

St. Michael-Albertville again tied the game, this time 17-17 behind the serving of Katherine Harms, who then served out for the final two points and the match victory at 19-17.

Ari Carlson and Sam Dale led the Card offense with 15 and 12 kills apiece, while Dale, Greta Wood and Val Smith led the defense with 52, 27 and 23 digs respectively. Katie Brown had 29 assists, with Keely Gross adding 17.
