The Alexandria girls’ tennis team kept pace in the Central Lakes Conference last Thursday with an impressive 6-1 win over Rocori.
The Cardinals won every match in straight sets, but three of those matches featured tiebreakers that Alexandria was able to come out on top in.
Annie Trebelhorn beat Mandi Nierinhausen for the first time with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory.
“She fell behind in the second set 2-5 and we talked about trying to gain some momentum going into the third set,” head coach Dave Ronning said. “But Annie had other plans as she fought her way back and won the set in a tiebreaker. This should be a big confidence booster for her as she battles tough opponents day in and day out at that first singles spot.”
Ashley White also needed a tiebreaker to take care of Steph Janson at No. 3 singles. White won the first set 7-6 (1) and then took care of business in the second with a 6-2 win.
At No. 1 doubles, Emily Wilkins and Eve Hartsell breezed through their match, winning 6-0, 6-0 to set the tone in the doubles lineup. Holea Bruggman and Laura Johnson won their first set in a tiebreaker before finishing off Nikki Buerman and Michelle Hienen, 6-2. Kristen Schmidt and Brianna Ebert also took care of their opponents, 6-2, 6-2.
“Our girls continue to play good tennis,” Ronning said. “We hope to peak in the next few weeks as we head to tournament time.”
The win moved the Cardinals to 6-1 in the CLC and 14-2 overall.
