Boys’ soccer game ends in 1-1 tie
Both Alexandria and St. Cloud Apollo were scoreless in the second half
The Cardinal boys’ soccer team came home with a 1-1 tie after traveling to St. Cloud last Thursday night to take on Apollo.
With the wind at their backs, the Cardinals controlled the flow of the game at the beginning, and in the 13th minute it paid off. Keeper Scott Hennen sent a ball deep down the field where Joe Wymore took control and made a move around the Eagles’ keeper to put the ball in the back of the net.
That 1-0 lead did not last long as Apollo found the net just two minutes later to send the game into the half tied at one apiece.
The Eagles had the wind in the second half, but they could not take full advantage of that as the two teams went scoreless the rest of the way in regulation.
“The Eagles seemed to get the better scoring [chances] with the wind at their backs,” head coach Wes Thompson said. “Scott [Hennen] came up with a couple of great saves in the second half to keep the game tied at 1-1.”
The two five-minute overtimes saw much of the same as neither team was able to break through with a goal. The tie moved the Cardinals’ record to 1-10-2 overall and 0-8-1 in the Central Lakes Conference.
